In an Ever-Changing Industry, IBPA Helps to Connect the Dots for Indies

2025 has already been a dramatic year for the publishing industry. From growing book challenges and attempts at bans in US schools and libraries, to the current administration's attempt to squelch DEI initiatives at major companies and universities, and the explosive growth of AI and LLMs which seem to threaten authorship on a global scale, everyone involved in the life cycle of a book is keeping a wary eye out for the next blow.

But there are some bright spots. The grassroots initiative We Are Stronger Than Censorship have successfully raised enough funds to put 2 books back into communities affected by book bans for every 1 book that was removed from circulation. The US Copyright Office released part 2 of its lengthy study on AI and underscored the need for human authorship in order for a work to receive copyright protection. And the Independent Book Publishers Association (IBPA) has recently voiced its unwavering commitment to foster freedom of expression and promotion of publishing efforts that support diversity, equity, and inclusion.

Here at Gryphon Publishing Consulting, we are long-time fans of independent publishing. We know that indie publishers continue to produce the most interesting, inspiring, and yes--sometimes necessarily disruptive--books out there. We continue to do our part to lift voices, to advocate for others, and to fight for what is right. To that end, we are excited to attend IBPA's Publishing University 2025 in less than two weeks. We hope that whether you are an indie publisher just starting out, an established publisher, an author publisher, or someone who is providing essential support to the publishing industry by marketing, editing, designing, or selling books, you will check out the amazing sessions that have been planned and join us in the Twin Cities!

If you do decide to attend, drop us a line and we'll look forward to meeting you there!

The expression "Content is King" has been with us for what seems ages now. Once used in reference to television or other media properties, it now broadly can refer to pretty much any intellectual property.

Because I’ve been in publishing rights for so long, it’s really hard for me to turn my brain off and NOT see things related to copyright, licensing, or permissions.

Sometimes, when you’re writing a book, you find just the right quote, passage, or photo that you want to use that will bring that something special to your work that you felt you were missing.
